The Upstart Gardener
England | South East | « Sussex | « Sussex (County)

Author: David Arscott. 116-page paperback; illustrated Bert Winborne began working in the gardens of the big houses of Sussex at the age of 14, and he learned every trick of the trade – many of which he reveals in this part-memoir, part-growing guide. In 1951 he won first prize in the national vegetable growing competiton at Olympia, after which he retired from competing and became a judge all over Sussex. Later he was ‘discovered’ by David Arscott, who was then a local BBC radio producer, and Bert became the regular gardening guru on Radio Brighton and then Radio Sussex for many years. Here we read colourful tales of the old days, when her ladyship demanded violets every day of the year; when the wily head gardener buttered up the fearsome cook; and when the best fertilier (‘yer own back’) came from the cesspit.
